Mission Statement The Mission of the Center for Anxiety and
Traumatic Stress Disorders at MGH is to conduct state-of-the-art research aimed at improving the standard of care for people
suffering from anxiety disorders.
The Center is investigating the efficacy of treatments for Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Complicated Grief, while seeking to learn more
about the underlying causes and course of Anxiety Disorders. The CATSD is now considered one of the leading centers for the
study of Anxiety Disorders worldwide.
The CATSD has trained a number of outstanding clinical investigators in
Anxiety Disorders, who have been very successful in obtaining grant support from both government and private sources. Members
of the CATSD have published over 300 original articles in refereed journals, and are currently conducting over 20 research
projects.
Staff
Naomi Simon, M.D., M.Sc. Director;
Complicated Grief Program Associate Director; Center for Anxiety and
Traumatic Stress Disorders
Dr. Naomi M. Simon, a board-certified psychiatrist, is Director of the Complicated Grief Program and Associate Director of
the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Psychiatry,
Harvard Medical School. Dr. Simon received an MD from Harvard Medical School, and completed a medical internship and residency
in psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital/ New York State Psychiatric Institute where she also served as Chief Resident.
In addition, she completed fellowship training in consultation psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, and has a Masters
in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Simon’s major clinical and research interests include initial and next step treatments for anxiety disorders, anxiety
comorbid with mood disorders, complicated grief, and the biological impact of chronic stress due to these disorders. She has
served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous studies examining the phenomenology and treatment of panic
disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Simon has participated
as Principal Investigator, Project Director or Co-investigator on studies funded by the National Institute of Mental Health
examining treatment refractory panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, anxiety comorbidity in bipolar disorder (STEP-BD),
and the impact of chronic stress and depression on cellular aging. Dr. Simon is a member of the Scientific
Advisory Board of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association,
and an Associate Member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. She has authored over 45 original research papers
appearing in peer-reviewed journals.
Mark Pollack, M.D. Director; Center for Anxiety
and
Traumatic Stress Disorders
Dr. Mark Pollack is Director of the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic
Stress Disorders at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He received
his M.D. in 1982 from New Jersey Medical School, and completed residency and fellowship training in psychiatry at Massachusetts
General Hospital.
Dr Pollack has received federal funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and National Institute of Drug
Abuse (NIDA) to study the longitudinal course of panic disorder, the application of cognitive-behavioral interventions for
the reduction of illicit drug use in drug abusers, the impact of terrorist attacks on the development of PTSD and course of
disorder in bipolar patients, changes in brain function as assessed by MR Spectroscopy and neuropsychological testing in patients
on methadone maintenance, treatment response and pharmacogenetics in refractory social anxiety disorder, and the and use of
d-cycloserine to enhance the treatment efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy in social anxiety and panic disorder.
He has published over 300 articles, reviews and chapters, and is co-editor of the books "Challenges in Clinical Practice:
Pharmacologic and Psychosocial Strategies", “Panic Disorder and Its Treatment,” and “Social Phobia:
Research and Practice”. Dr. Pollack is editor-in-chief of the journal CNS Neuroscience and Therapeutics, lectures widely
in national and international forum, serves on numerous editorial and advisory boards, including the Board of Directors of
the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Institute of the Massachusetts General Hospital, and is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory
Board of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.His areas of clinical and research interest include the acute and long-term
course, pathophysiology and treatment of patients with anxiety disorders and associated comorbidities, development of novel
pharmacologic agents for mood and anxiety disorders, uses of combined cognitive-behavioral and pharmacologic therapies for
treatment refractory patients, presentation and treatment of anxiety in the medical setting, and the pathophysiology and treatment
of substance abuse.
